#0048: This Week On The Air–February 3, 2026

I go over our planned programming for the fourth Tuesday in January, 2026. This week: OBJECTIONable content, as per usual

Hey, y’all! Good to see you. It’s Tuesday, and you know what that means; it’s once again time for Talkie Time and The Jazz Program on your favorite radio station, datafruits.fm!

Let’s see what we’ve got playing tonight…

Talkie Time: Mr. District Attorney - Case Of The Living Dead Man / Case Of The Pyromaniac Murder

hey man it's a good office policy to have, alright

Some folks may not know this about me, but I’m a huge fan of adventure games. One of my favorite series is the Ace Attourney games, mostly because I have a hacked DS, can bring ’em around anywhere, and therefore have more opportunities to play ’em than most. Anyways, everyone’s favorite OBJECTION enthusiast has been on my mind as of late, and you can probably thank him for this week’s episode.1

Mr. District Attorney–the radio play, not the 1941 Republic Pictures film of the same name, the 1941 Republic sequel to the 1941 Republic film called “Mr. District Attorney In The Carter Case”, the 1942 Republic sequel to THAT film called “Secrets Of The Underground”, OR the 1947 Columbia Pictures film of the same name as the first film and the radio series which is entirely different in both tone and content from the first film….

…look, maybe Mr. District Attorney and the Ace Attorney series have more in common than just subject matter, alright?

Anyways, the radio play starred a good few actors in its title role, with Vicki Vola as Edith Miller and either Walter Kinsella or Len Doyle as Len Harrington, chief investigator for the District Attorney. Tonight’s episodes have David Bryan and Len Doyle in the slots of our leading man and bumbling investigator, respectively.

We’ve got “Case Of The Living Dead Man”, originally aired on July 26, 1953, and “Case Of The Pyromaniac Murder”, which originally aired on August 4, 1953.

The Jazz Program: Casiopea 3rd - Panspermia (2019) / Ta·Ma·Te·Box (2013) / I·Bu·Ki (2016)

(This program originally aired January 16, 2024.)

...no, i don't know why they named the album this either

You’d be hard pressed to find a jazz fusion act out of Japan as legendary as Casiopea2. Issei Noro and Tetsuo Sakurai have been pumping out fantastic jazz fusion for longer than a good portion of my audience has been alive (including myself) and they’re still going strong to this day.

We’ll be focusing on the third iteration of Issei Noro and Tetsuo Sakurai’s legendary jazz fusion act, Casiopea 3rd.

This lineup brings Kiyomi Otaka along for the keyboard section and puts the fantastic Akira Jimbo on the drumkit, and the grooves are as immaculate as you’d expect.

We’re starting the evening off with 2019’s “Panspermia”, following it up with 2013’s “Ta·Ma·Te·Box”, and closing the evening out with 2016’s “I·Bu·Ki”. Come join us.

That’s all for this week! Thank you so much for reading, and I do hope you enjoy tonight’s show. We’re back to reruns as I finish up this month’s Clippings column. They’re good reruns though, I promise.

Speaking of which: if you’re reading this the day of, and you can make it in tonight, you should come hang out in the chat with us on Datafruits! We’ve got a good crowd of folks in the chat every week, and whether you have a suggestion for a future show or just want to hang out and chat with fellow jazz enjoyers, you’re welcome here with us.

You’re all amazing and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not. Stay safe out there, and I’ll see you back again next week. Same time, same station: on datafruits dot fm..

Footnotes…

  1. I’d be using a screenshot from Ace Attorney 1 here–this one is from Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth–but as it turns out, TWiLightMenu’s screencap function only actually screencaps whichever screen the DS considers to be "active" at the time. So, the only shots I have of the dialogue in Ace Attorney 1 from an actual DS (well technically a hacked 3DS, but still) is just the play button on the bottom screen that they play during dialogue….soo you’re getting the funniest line from the first case in AAI:ME 1 instead. ↩︎

  2. As legendary as Noro and Sakurai’s minty jam machine is, the distinction “from Japan” is necessary for two reasons–one, J-fusion is its own genre if we’re being honest with ourselves, and two, The Rippingtons exist. I love Casiopea as much as the next jazz dork, but we all know no one is topping The Rippingtons. ↩︎
