#0073: This Week On The Air–October 6, 2026

I go over our planned programming for the first Tuesday in October 2026. This week: i'm gonna pop some diiiscs, only got twenty dollars in my pockeeeet

Hey, y’all! Hope you’re doing well this evening. I’m back from my most recent photojournalism assignment, and I’ve got some brand new programming this week for you all! Let’s get right into it.

Talkie Time: Planet Man, Because God Hates Us All And There Is Nothing But Suffering Upon This Earth And In The Barren Wasteland Of The Heavens

BY YOUR POWERS COMBINED, I HAVE A FUCKING HEADACHE. also that's still the wrong planet man, someone really should fucking check these things

You know the drill by now. It’s the first of the month, and the Trash Godz demand MOAR PLANET MAN. We’ve made all the usual jokes by this point, so head on over to the archives if you’d like to know more about Dantro and his eternal struggle against plotlines that make sense and having a space ship that isn’t suspiciously staffed by literal children for some reason.

This week, we continue our involuntary listen-through of Cowboy Dan In Space’s horrific war on all alienkind and their insistence upon things like “character development” and “literary themes” with episodes 23 through 26.

Will Dantro ever answer for his crimes? Is there a just god in the universe? Are we here for any reason but to suffer? No, no, and no. But will we at least be done with Planet Man soon? God, I sure hope so. I’m almost out of pop culture references that are vaguely planet-related and man-shaped, and this whole blog would just kind of collapse if I ran out of visual gags.

The Jazz Program Presents Crate Pulls From The Thrift Store - Paul Horn’s Inside, Edgar Froese’s Kamikaze 1989, and The Southern Phlax Coalition’s Brass Band

You can find some weird fuckin shit at the thrift store, man. Depending on where I’ve lived, I’ve found everything from a working Xbox 360 for twenty bucks becaue it “didn’t have a hard drive” – it was a 360 slim, those don’t have external hard drive, so I scored pretty hard there – to a copy of Zorn’s Naked City for a single American dollar.

But not everything you find at a thrift shop is a diamond in the rough, ready to be pawned on eBay for five times what you pay for it. Sometimes, the discs that catch your eye the most are just the fuckin’ weird ones. And I’ve got three records worth of oddball for you tonight, courtesy of none other than a Goodwill here in Madison, WI.

First off, we’ve got ambient flute recorded live from inside the Taj Mahal with Paul Horn’s Inside, released originally on CBS Records in 1969 and released on compact disc thanks to RYKODISC in 1987.

After that, we’ve got some ultraviolent movie soundtrack weirdness courtesy of composer Edgar Froese, with the soundtrack to Kamikaze 1989, released in 1982 by Virgin Records.

And finally, we’ve got what I think is a local high school batting well above their weight. The Southern Phlax Coalition is not exactly what you’d call southern; the liner notes claim this was recorded in Cross Plains, WI, and gives a 608-area-code phone number (which I will not be listing here) that you can call for more information. What they are is adequately funky for a bunch of Wisconsonites. We’ve got their record “Brass Band” (I think? there isn’t really a clearly listed album title here, seeing as the package design is about what you’d expect from a bunch of high schoolers), self-released in 1999.

aaaaaand that about covers this week’s show! Next week, we’ll be ushering in the fall with our favorite defunct record label hoodie, as well as enjoying “some of the worst acting and writing of any detective show to reach the airwaves”.

If you’re reading this the day of, and you can make it in tonight, you should come hang out in the chat with us on Datafruits! We’ve got a good crowd of folks in the chat every week, and whether you have a suggestion for a future show or just want to hang out and chat with fellow jazz enjoyers, you’re welcome here with us.

You’re all amazing and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not. Stay safe out there, and I’ll see you back again next week. Same time, same station: on datafruits dot fm..
