Hello again! It’s time once again for yours truly to hit the airwaves on your favorite radio station, datafruits.fm. We’re back on the air after some heat-related time off last week with some all new programming! Let’s take a look at what we’ve got on the docket this evening…
Talkie Time: It’s Fuckin’ Planet Man, Again - Episodes 7-10
no, not that planet man. wrong planet man. different planet man
So, I’mma be real with you here. When we last played Planet Man, I genuinely expected it to be a one-time bit where I show off one of the more cringy forays into science-fiction in old-time radio, made some obscure references to Hideo Kojima because “cops in space lol”, make a mention about how the series is missing a few recordings because nobody gave a shit enough to preserve them, and leave it at that.
Turns out you all really, REALLY like cringy forays into science fiction in old-time radio. So much so that (in no small part thanks to the kids from Trashgodz, who have a show on Datafruits every first Tuesday before mine–check out some of their recordings here) I feel like I kind of have to make this a semi-regular series.
Oh joy.
Tonight, we’ve got even more strapping men in tight spandex and space helmets for you, (no, not those ones, the other ones) as Cowboy Dan In Space once again goes and punches some aliens in the dick for the good of mankind or whatever. In order, we’ve got “Marston Has Given a Kidnapping Order”, “Hurrying Thru the Tunnel to Aid Billy and Jane”, “Hoping for a Miracle to Stop Marston”, and “Billy and Jane in a Space Ship Heading for Earth?”
Will the Planet Man return to the Talkie Time again, you ask? I mean, probably, if you all keep going on about it. Ask nicely, please. No screaming. And stop throwing your spaceship toy at your sister. I will turn this car around and we will all go home. There will be NO MCDONALDS, damnit. Put your seatbelt back on. Mommy is trying to drive.
The Jazz Program : George Benson - Live At Montreaux 1986
Some of us pick something up at an early age and realize that we’re going to be doing that thing for the rest of our lives. In that, George Benson and I have something in common. I picked up a pencil when I was eight years old and realized that I wanted to spend my life drawing comics. George Benson, meanwhile, picked up a ukelele in a drug store and never stopped playing music. Personally, I think he got the better deal.
One of the American stalwarts of smooth jazz fusion, Benson’s career spans a half-century and includes some of the most soulful records to ever come out of Pennsylvania (and if you’ve listened to this show in the past,, you know that’s not something we say lightly. Hell, I own a couple of his records on vinyl, and they’re fairly regular spins for me when I’m feeling some smooth jazz. Tonight, though, we’re taking a look at his live work; specifically, his set at the 20th annual Montreaux Jazz Festival in 1986.
We’ve got the entirety of his 1986 set, originally released on DVD in 2005 by Eagle Vision in the UK and Eagle Eye Media in the US and re-released on CD by Mercury Studios in 2023.
And that about covers this week’s show!
If you’re reading this the day of, and you can make it in tonight, you should come hang out in the chat with us on Datafruits! We’ve got a good crowd of folks in the chat every week, and whether you have a suggestion for a future show or just want to hang out and chat with fellow jazz enjoyers, you’re welcome here with us.
You’re all amazing and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not. Stay safe out there, and I’ll see you back again next week. Same time, same station: on datafruits dot fm..
