#0058: This Week On The Air–April 28, 2026

I go over our planned programming for the fourth Tuesday in April, 2026. This year: our boy Casey's in trouble again, and we head over to the listening room in the other sunny land (no, not the one from last week, the other one)

Hello again! It’s time once again for yours truly to hit the airwaves on your favorite radio station, datafruits.fm. We’ve got two new episodes worth of programming for you this evening, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy what you hear. Let’s get into it, shall we?

Talkie Time: Casey, Crime Photographer - Too Many Angels / The Wolverine

IN THIS EPISODE CASEY IS BEING A FUCKING PERVERT

We’ve played the exploits of our friend Casey and his buddies at the Bluenote on the program before; they’ve got one of my favorite ensemble casts and one of my favorite dorky heroes in all of old-time radio, after all. And, while I have some other interesting shows I haven’t introduced you all to yet waiting in the wings, I was in a mood to pop in and visit our old friends. So let’s do just that, with two more episodes of Casey, Crime Photographer.

First up, it’s “Too Many Angels”, originally aired on November 13, 1947, in which an angel is killed. No, not that kind of angel. You’re probably thinking of something you’d see on Mysterious Traveller or some kind of anime about some twink’s dead mom. Although it would be hilarious to see some jackass with a Speed Graphic come face to face with NERV.

After that, it’s “The Wolverine”, which originally aired on May 5, 1949. In this one, some crazy bastard starts icing members of the mob and piling up bodies. No not that crazy bastard. This isn’t tights-and-fights. You’re probably thinking of the Blue Beetle, and Casey’s probably getting flashbacks to people yelling at him to get pictures of Spiderman.

The Jazz Program Presents A Spotlight On Terasima Records - Akira Matsuo Trio’s Alone Together (2007) / Yuko Ohashi’s Kiss From A Rose (2021)

One day soon, I promise.

Yasukuni Terashima is a legend in the Japanese jazz scene. Owner of the listening room and jazz bar MEG, author of over twenty books on the art of jazz,, and head of the record label Terasima Records, Terashima has some damn good taste.

Sadly, most of that taste is region-locked; a good portion of the label’s releases are distributed only in Japan, and are very difficult to track down on any kind of digital storefront or streaming service. (And no, I already spend the show’s budget for the month last month, so no more importing records until I get paid. But I’ve managed to track down a few, and tonight, we’re going to check them out.

We’ve only got two records this evening; I had to cut the third one I had planned, Italian-born Alessandro Galati’s 2019 Live From The Inside Out, for time and space reasons. Don’t worry, we’ll be doing an episode on him soon enough.

Starting off, we’ve got the fantastic jazz drummer Akira Matsuo and his trio, performing Alone Together, released in 2007.

And, after that, we’ve got the lovely piano stylings of Yuko Ohashi and her trio, with 2021’s Kiss From A Rose.

Come join us for a listening tour in the land of the rising sun this evening; it’s well worth the trip, and these records are well worth meditating on.

That about covers this week’s show! Next week, we’ll be heading over to Brazil in search of Orpheus, and squeezing our butts into blue spandex. (Can you guess what we’re playing next week from these clues? If so, email me at piperbomb (at) protonmail (dot) com if you think you can guess next week’s programming for either The Jazz Program or Talkie Time; if you can, I’ll give you a shoutout on-air!)

If you’re reading this the day of, and you can make it in tonight, you should come hang out in the chat with us on Datafruits! We’ve got a good crowd of folks in the chat every week, and whether you have a suggestion for a future show or just want to hang out and chat with fellow jazz enjoyers, you’re welcome here with us.

You’re all amazing and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not. Stay safe out there, and I’ll see you back again next week. Same time, same station: on datafruits dot fm..
