Sooo…no TDOV show?
Alright. So, I know some of y’all – namely, those of you who only know me from my work doing Clippings as a graphic novelist and trans historian and my work covering trans rights protests as a photojournalist, and who do not listen to this show and are unfamiliar with the Jackassery that Goes Down here on this radio block – are gonna get Real Weird at me for not doing a Trans Day Of Visibility episode.
So, for those of you in that boat…three things.
One, I have a jaw that can cut stone and a voice deeper than Ville Vallo’s. I have to be visible every day, sweetie. My trans ass ain’t got a choice.
Two, I just turned in this month’s Clippings, which means I just spent a week of my life slamming through historical research, reading multiple books, and putting pen to paper. I’ve also just started putting work into the print edition of the first two years of Clippings strips, and I’ve been drafting up some other longer, graphic-novel length projects as well. You’ll get your trans history soon enough, I promise. In the meantime, I contain multitudes and this is where the sillier multitudes live.
Three….dawg have you seen the news lately? Sometimes a cat just needs a laugh.
So yes. Happy Trans Day Of Visibility to all my trans siblings. Love y’all. Personally, I’m partial to Trans Day Of Revenge myself, but we all express ourselves differently, and that’s what being part of this big happy community is all about.
Now that we’ve got that disclaimer out of the way…
The Annual APRIL FOOLS DAY Special: The Worlds Most Fuckin’ Sus-Ass Album Covers
Last year, we had 3 straight hours of ska. This year, I’ve got something so much worse.
You probably caught a few of the past couple show’s visual gags, and no, I was not joking. I’m not even gonna go into detail on the personnel or making of these albums. I’m just gonna give you the album covers.
Michael Henderson's "Slingshot". Get off the screen, Zardoz. There's a new hairy hunk in town.
Candito's "Thousand Finger Man", which earns its inclusion on title alone and also insists upon a "no shirt, all service" mentality. Think of all the things you could do with that many fingers. Whoo buddy.
"Jazz-Nova : Airto Moreira". This one is region-locked; you'd only get to see this cover of samba group Sambalanço Trio's "Reencontro Com Sambalanço Trio" in Japan. For some reason, they trashed the fairly modern '60s look of the original art and the entire trio's name in favor of highlighting the drummer's hairy chesticle airstrip. They know what they like in Japan, what can I say?
Art Webb's "Love Eyes". Or, alternatively, Art Webb's "Do You Wanna Fuck A Centauurrrrrrrrrr? Do You Wanna Suck My Fluuuteeeee?", sung to the tune of that one track from that Disney movie about white women getting frostbite or whatever idk man i didn't watch it
And, for no other reason than bonus points:
Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar". I will not be elaborating further.
I want the record to show that I managed to somehow compile this deeply unsettling stack of covers without needing to throw in Push Push or that one Miles album that looks like he’s trying to autofellate himself with his trumpet.. I do my research, damnit. That level of quality is what The Jazz Program is all abo–koff sputter laughter sorry dawg i can’t even finish that sentence
That about covers this week’s show! Assuming I’m not booted off of the Datafruits roster for my atrocities against everyone’s sensibilities and good taste, we’ll be back next week with normal programming. Well, as “normal” as we get around here, anyways.
If you’re reading this the day of, and you can make it in tonight, you should come hang out in the chat with us on Datafruits! We’ve got a good crowd of folks in the chat every week, and whether you have a suggestion for a future show or just want to hang out and chat with fellow jazz enjoyers, you’re welcome here with us.
You’re all amazing and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not. Stay safe out there, and I’ll see you back again next week. Same time, same station: on datafruits dot fm..
