#0004: This Week On The Air–January 14, 2025

I go over our planned programming for my radio shows The Jazz Program and Talkie Time for the second week of January, 2025 Plan, of course, is a word we're using reeeal loosely here...

Talkie Time : …Will Not Be Heard This Week, Because I Fucked Up

…Yeah, I knew there’d be at least one hiccup this month. This one’s on me, I’m not back in the weekly groove just yet and I’m also drowning in freelance work this week, so I literally forgot it was Tuesday. It’s now 8:36 PM as I’m writing this, and I’m currently on the air.

Joys.

Thankfully, I have an immense music library and am never really at a loss for Random Shit To Play, so I hope you all enjoy a smattering of what I’ve been listening to as of late. Loooot of 69 Eyes, lot of Type O Negative. Can you tell I had a metal radio show before doing The Jazz Program?

And speaking of…

The Jazz Program: Chihiro Yamanaka - Monk Studies / When October Goes / After Hours

We're not playing this one tonight, but you should still give it a listen anyways.

If you remember the old blog at all, you may remember a little something I used to do called “The Listening List”, where I recorded every unique album I listened to in a month on a Markdown file and threw it up here on the site. There was a brief few months where half of the jazz records in that list were by one Chihiro Yamanaka, and for good reason–I was absolutely obsessed with her records for a good minute.

Apparently I’m not the only one to be struck by her keywork–her 2011 Umbria Jazz Festival performance had one reviewer describe her piano work as “a bit like Mulgrew Miller on classically trained steroids”. I’d say that’s an accurate assessment of her skills, and I’m more than stoked to share these records with all of you tonight.

We’ll be taking a listen to three records of hers; namely, 2017’s “Monk Studies”, 2002’s “When October Goes”, and 2008’s “After Hours”. You know it’s going to be a good set of records when even I can’t get them out of my head. Tune in–you’re in for a treat.

That’s about all we’ve got for this week. Thanks again for y’all’s patience while I get back in the saddle. Next week will have some quality Talkie Time, I promise. You’re all amazing and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not. Stay safe out there, and I’ll see you on the air tonight and then back again next week; same time, same station.

Have a good one.
